Our Fishing

West Lothian Angling Association are responsible for all fishing on approx. 56 miles of The River Almond and its tributaries. WLAA leases the fishings from Crown Estates Scotland and it includes all migratory and native species and is bound by lease requirements and other statutory requirements. WLAA is committed to providing local fishing at an affordable cost, working with others to promote best practice and to manage the fishings for the benefit of its members and the fish species, including their environment.

A BIT ABOUT OUR RIVER

The River Almond is a river haunted by industrial heritage and even still it has its difficulties reacting to how people treat it. Right now is the most exciting time to fish the Almond as it is far from the polluted river it used to be.

Weirs and dams are being modified to allow Salmon and Sea Trout to return, this is especially important in the low water seasons, the river is rewilding and quite spectacular in places amongst incredible architecture.

The anglers are welcoming, and the big trout are often quite obliging.

The Almond is primarily a Brown Trout river, however Sea Trout and Salmon are caught if conditions are right. The water is varied throughout, from slow willow lined bends settling into deeper pools to rapids over limestone slabs and through giant deciduous woodlands; to urban concrete lined sections; to mossy boulders and stunning bridges, and lastly to steep banks in arable fields.

What more can any angler ask for, is it possible for you to have too many options when it comes to your fishing. Park up for the day and take “your piece” (sandwiches) for a walk, or leap frog in the car up and down the river – whatever suits you.

Despite high membership numbers, the angling pressure remains very low and the value for money is second to none.

Our Beats

We have split our 56 miles of fishing down into to 4 beats, as well as our tributaries and upper reaches to make it easier for you to work out where to head. Whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner, we have something for everyone with some really easily accessible stretches to some really difficult to access streams set within precipitous woodland areas. Come and enjoy the beauty of nature be it urban or small areas of untouched natural beauty  while catching some cracking fish!
